Anyways, they have made AMAZING progress. I HIGHLY recommend SwimKids to anyone who wants to see real quality results when it comes to teaching your kids how to swim. I have tried some centers that are closer to my neighborhood, but was not happy with the results. I think it helps that SwimKids is every day of the week and not just once a week. The SwimKids in Leesburg is only a 15 minute drive, but it's worth it!! I love it, and the Kids love it!!!

We had different instructors each week, and each one was superb. They really know how to work with the kids and get them going with the right techniques. Both my girls, even at just 3 weeks worth of lessons, are swimming so confidently, front and back floating, kicking, opening eyes under the water, and pushing off from the wall. They are learning some great safety skills right now in Level 4.

"I cannot begin to tell you what a profound effect SwimKids has had on Omar's life. He is still in disbelief that he has accomplished his goal (of being on a team). I realize that for most children this would not be considered a big deal. But for Omar, it is huge. … Omar has been swimming with SwimKids, for almost 6 years. Omar suffers from dyspraxia (which affects muscular movement), visual perception deficit, and auditory processing disorder. Essentially, Omar can't see perfectly, cannot hear perfectly, and cannot execute precise muscular movements. As you can imagine, these combined disorders make Omar a prime target for bullying and he has spent much of his childhood dodging the taunts and unkind comments.

Omar's goal in life has always been to be part of a team. Any team. Any team where he would be treated as an equal. We tried every sport which would allow him to be on a team. We tried gymnastics, martial arts, soccer...the list goes on. Omar would participate, in some cases for several years, and then come to the realization that it was not a sport he could pursue. His team mates are now at the age where they realize Omar is the weakest link, and they make it known. He was never accepted.

The only sport Omar persisted with was swim. It was the only place where he was shown encouragement and given praise for his hard work. His progress was slow. Often he would watch his peers graduate before him yet he would continue to practice the moves at home or with his physical therapist until he got it right. Sometimes it would take him months to get a simple technique perfected.

The person who has seen us through all these stages is Coach Angie Baker. I have never met anyone who is so whole-heartedly dedicated to her job. She approached me and asked if I could bring Omar in to 'try out' the swim team. I was shocked. Surely not Omar. I was hesitant. But Angie was steadfast in her advice.

The next day, I brought Omar to the practice. I saw all the swimmers pulling on their flippers and goggles and I immediately knew there would be a problem. Omar is unable to do these fine motor movements and would not be able to get the flippers on without help. As I watched from a distance, I saw Keith (who had never met Omar) climb out of the pool and discretely help Omar on with his gear. He was obviously aware of the fact that Omar struggles with motor tasks on land. The rest of that practice was a blur for me because I spent most of it in tears. Omar climbed in and he swam with his team. Nobody had to wait for him to catch up. Nobody laughed at him. And nobody stared. For the first time, Omar appeared 'normal' whilst doing a sport.

When practice was over, I exchanged a few words with Keith and it became apparent that he had researched Omar's disorders to find out how he could help him. I was amazed. Even Omar's school teachers have never gone to the trouble to read about his challenges. I subsequently learned that Keith and Angie had talked at length on the phone to brainstorm ways to work best with Omar. I am so very grateful to both of them to have gone to this trouble.

I thank you for giving this opportunity to Omar. Above all, I thank Coach Angie for treating my child as if he were her own. She has been a guiding light since Omar started swimming at age 3. ….Now he can hold his head a little higher. Because of her commitment and dedication, Omar has been able to accomplish his life-long goal. SwimKids has changed his life.

The other day she was playing with her Barbies on her water table and I overheard her giving swim lessons to her Barbie dolls. She told them she was coach Cara and they were going to have "so much fun today." She ran through the songs and various exercises (bobs, floats, kicks, etc.) with each Barbie. What particularly struck me was the way she was praising each of "them" for their effort and hard work...just as she receives each lesson.
